Finding a Home for Life: Jim’s Story

Read about Jim's journey at St. Andrew's Adult Home, Singapore's only autism-focused residential Home.

Jim, aged 42, has been a resident at the St. Andrew’s Adult Home (SAAH) – Singapore’s first purpose-built residential facility that offers 24/7 support for adults with autism. His mother, Mdm Chong, aged 74, is the primary caregiver for Jim.

A Place to Call Home

Since Jim’s enrollment to SAAH in September 2022, Mdm Chong has observed significant growth in him. He has especially made progress in his ability to manage his emotions and she sees a difference in his overall well-being. He laughs and smiles more, and seems happier. She appreciates how the care staff at SAAH take the time to understand Jim as a person, recognising his needs and the best ways to communicate with him.

For Mdm Chong, knowing that Jim is living in a place like SAAH brings her immense relief. The support provided by SAAH has lifted some of the weight off her shoulders, allowing her to navigate her role as a caregiver with more ease.

As she ages into her mid-seventies, she is uncertain about how long she will be able to care for him. It is her deepest wish that he remains in a safe and loving environment like SAAH.

"I hope Jim continues to find joy and comfort at SAAH and truly feels at home there."

An Understanding Society

Beyond Jim’s personal journey, Mdm Chong hopes for continued support, better funding and a deeper understanding and appreciation of autism within the community. “Change can only happen when people take the time to truly understand autism and accept persons with autism as they are,” she emphasised.

She also hopes people will develop greater empathy for persons with autism and gain a deeper understanding of the everyday challenges caregivers face – from balancing multiple family responsibilities and managing daily routines to navigating social stigma – all while ensuring long-term support for their loved ones.

Most of all, she hopes that people will be kinder and gentler, recognising that persons with autism are, at their core, fellow human beings who deserve acceptance, respect, and inclusion – not set apart from the rest of society.

The 24/7 care provided by SAAH goes a long way to lighten the burden and duty of care of many caregivers, especially those who are aging, while giving persons with moderate to severe autism the opportunity to live with dignity and meaning.

With your contribution, Jim and his family, along with many other adults with autism who need daily support, can be sustainably and well taken care of for the long term.
